The Expert Panel for Fragrance Safety is celebrating its 55th anniversary. The panel was founded as an independent panel of experts to oversee and review the science conducted by the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM).

The panel comprises internationally recognized academic scientists with no ties to the fragrance industry, including dermatologists, pathologists, toxicologists and environmental scientists. It selects its own members, who serve on a rotating basis.

RIFM’s vice president, Anne Marie Api, Ph.D., said, “The establishment of the independent Expert Panel for Fragrance Safety in 1967 was the first of several steps taken to ensure the scientific objectivity of our work. Among many other things, the panel provides us with strategic guidance and determines scientific study design interprets test results for relevance to human health and environmental protection. RIFM literally could not do our work without them.”
