JFFMA OKs Three Flavors for Use

The Japan Flavor and Fragrance Materials Association (JFFMA) has reported the designation of three flavoring substances by the Ministry of Health Labor and Welfare. This designation means that the flavoring substances are legally permitted for use in flavors in Japan, effective immediately.

The substances are 5-methyl-6, 7-dihydro-5H-cyclopentapyrazine (FEMA# 3306, CAS# 23747-48-0, JECFA# 781), 2-(3-phenylpropyl)pyridine (FEMA# 3751, CAS# 2110-18-1, JECFA# 1321) and 2,3-diethyl-5-methylpyrazine (FEMA# 3336, CAS# 18138-04-0, JECFA# 777).

Additionally, this letter notes more designations are underway as the result of an effort sponsored by the IOFI Science Board to achieve acceptance in Japan of substances that are in international use but do not fit in any of the 18 structural groups currently used in the Japanese regulation of chemically defined substances.
