BASF scientists will present their latest research at the 36th IFSCC Congress, taking place September 28–October 1 in Perth, Australia. The congress theme, “Solving the Sustainable Beauty Equation,” focuses on balancing sustainability, performance and innovation in cosmetic science.
In Session 11: Formulation & Bio-Sourcing, Nicole Lv, technical key account manager, BASF Beauty Care Solutions, APAC, will present “New Versatile Natural and Safe Solvent to Enhance Extraction Efficiency” on September 30 at 11:35 a.m. in the Riverside Theatre.
The research investigates plant waters, particularly coconut water, as extraction solvents for botanical compounds. According to BASF, coconut-water extraction increased polyphenol content across various botanical sources and enriched rose and citrus extracts in compound classes including flavonol glycosides and flavanone glycosides, respectively. The resulting extracts also demonstrated benefits related to epidermal cohesion and barrier resilience.
The approach also builds on earlier BASF-associated research specifically examining coconut water as an extraction solvent. U.S. Patent 10,981,084, assigned to BASF Beauty Care Solutions France SAS and the University of Avignon, describes methods for extracting compounds from biological material using coconut water and reports higher concentrations of certain target compounds compared with distilled water alone.
