Isobionics, the biotechnology brand from flavor and fragrance company BASF, announced the launch of its newest natural ingredient, Natural alpha-Farnesene 95. This ingredient is produced from precision fermentation technology and can be used for a variety of lime applications.

The company’s press release describes the scent of Natural alpha-Farnesene 95 as a vegetable odor with celery note, followed by a sappy, plant-stem like note and fruit skin. The taste was described as sappy, slightly floral, waxy apple or pear skin, citrus and some white flower notes. Further, Natural alpha-Farnesene 95 has a 95% purity and can be used in beverages, sweets and a broad range of other citrus and fruit flavor formulations.

“This product represents our strong commitment to providing our customers with innovative, high-quality aroma ingredients,” said Steffen Götz, senior vice president of aroma ingredients at BASF. “Like all Isobionics products, Natural alpha-Farnesene 95 is fermentation-based and produced from renewable resources. This means it has reliable availability, independent of weather or harvest conditions. The product boasts an outstanding purity of more than 95% and provides exceptional new opportunities in our customers’ formulations.”

Isobionics’ new ingredient is compliant with EU and US food grade regulations and is certified as natural, pesticide-free, kosher and halal.

Giovanni D’Andola, flavor launch manager at BASF, added, “Isobionics Natural alpha-Farnesene 95 completes our lime oil natural sesquiterpene ingredient portfolio. We’re proud to offer this extensive range of flavor ingredients for our customers’ lime applications, which is unique in the market.”
