Ocean-powered body care brand Uni is making its first move into fine fragrance with the launch of Eau de Fraîche, a two-scent collection that signals a notable shift toward skin-centric perfumery. Founded by Alexandra Keating, the brand has built its identity around marine-derived actives and barrier-supporting formulations; with this debut, it extends that philosophy into scent, positioning fragrance not as a finishing layer, but as an integrated step in skin wellness. The collection is now available via Ulta Beauty’s e-commerce platform, with a direct-to-consumer rollout following.

At the heart of the launch is a technical reframing of fragrance structure. Rather than relying on ethanol as a primary carrier, Eau de Fraîche utilizes a water-based system built on purified water, glycerin, and plant-derived humectants. A PEG-free solubilization system enables a stable microdispersion of fragrance oils, allowing for gradual diffusion and a softer, more intimate sillage.

Perfumer & Flavorist+ asked Alexandra Keating, founder and CEO of Uni, about the struggle conventional alcohol-free fragrances face with sillage and shelf stability.

"Uni addresses that trade off by using a system of PEG free, plant derived solubilizers to create a smooth micro dispersion of fragrance oils in water, rather than relying on alcohol for lift," says Keating. "That allows the scent to spread more evenly on skin and release in a softer, more continuous way. Combined with modern aroma molecules that enhance diffusion and longevity, the formula delivers a more skin friendly fragrance experience with the radiance and performance consumers expect from a prestige EDP."

Keating adds, "Without alcohol, stability has to be built through a more layered preservation system. Uni's formula uses multifunctional humectants and preservation boosters alongside food grade preservatives, antioxidants, chelating support, and pH adjustment to help protect against microbial growth and maintain formula integrity over time. That approach allows the product to remain shelf stable while preserving its skin first, alcohol-free positioning, supported by a 12-month period after opening."

Each scent in the collection is powered by Uni’s proprietary marine complex, a blend of seawater, brown seaweeds, red microalgae and humectants designed to support hydration and defend against environmental stressors. The inclusion of functional marine actives in a fine fragrance format reflects a broader industry movement toward treatment fragrances, where performance claims extend beyond olfactive impact to measurable skin benefits. In this context, Eau de Fraîche aligns with emerging development work around alcohol-free bases, dermal compatibility, and long-wear delivery systems that do not compromise skin condition.

P&F+ asked Keating how difficult it is to maintain a high fragrance oil load while ensuring the formula remains truly supportive of skin physiology.

"[I]t reflects a broader shift toward fragrance that does more than smell beautiful," she says. "Consumers increasingly want scent, skin comfort and ingredient credibility in one product. Technically, that is not easy to achieve. Fragrance oils, water and skin supportive ingredients must be carefully balanced to maintain performance, stability and skin compatibility. Uni's formula does that through a combination of humectants, gentle solubilizers, and its marine complex, creating a fragrance that feels both sensorial and skin conscious.

The launch is supported by a campaign fronted by Toni Garrn, reinforcing the collection’s positioning at the intersection of sensorial luxury and skin-first care. The messaging—“fragrance that feels as good as it smells”—mirrors a wider market pivot toward experiential wellness, where tactile and physiological benefits are increasingly expected alongside scent performance.

Olfactively, the collection introduces two compositions that translate Uni’s marine positioning into distinct scent narratives. Ischia Sunset, an extension of the brand’s 24 Hour Body Serum signature, pairs juniper brightness with cedar leaf and smoked sandalwood for a warm, textural drydown designed to sit close to the skin. Rain, by contrast, leans into a fresher, more atmospheric profile, opening with juniper, bergamot, and pink berries before evolving into a heart of cedar and grapefruit and a base of fig, patchouli, and cypriol. Both compositions are positioned as low-concentration, skin-hugging formats, emphasizing intimacy over projection.

With a collection powered by a complex of sea water, seaweed extracts and red microalgae, P&F+ asked how is Uni ensuring the long-term sustainability of these raw materials as the brand scales its presence in major retailers like Ulta Beauty.

"For Uni, sustainability starts with disciplined ingredient selection and responsible supplier partnerships," says Keating. "The marine complex was chosen not just for storytelling, but for real skin and formula benefits, and it sits within a broader system of water-based, alcohol free, plant derived fragrance technology. As the brand scales, the focus is on working with partners that can support quality, traceability, and consistency, while maintaining the clean and regulatory standards the brand is built on."
