REACH and the Flavor Industry

A recent information letter from the International Organization of the Flavor Industry provides guidance to the flavor industry on how it could be impacted by the Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH) program. Flavors are generally exempt from REACH, though there are exceptions, including oral care and tobacco products. Other ways in which REACH may be of concern for the flavor industry:

  • Dual impact materials that may find use in flavors and fragrances:registration is required only for the volumes applied to fragrances.
  • Materials produced by flavor companies or their suppliers which are not for use in flavorings must be registered.
  • As the European Flavor & Fragrance Association's REACH task force is evaluating substances for PBT status, additional ingredients may have use restrictions.
