UPDATE: IFRA Transparency List Live

As previously reported, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) has posted an alphabetized list of member-utilized fragrance ingredients. This "Transparency List" currently contains 3,163 materials* reported in a 2008 survey. According to the organization, this list comprises about 90% of the world's production volume of fragrances. Further surveys will be carried out at intervals to keep the list up-to-date. Material listings include US and EU CAS numbers.

“We believe releasing information on our materials will help us in our efforts to communicate about the industry’s extensive safety program more comprehensively,” said Jean-Pierre Houri, IFRA director general, in a statement. “The publication of the fragrance industry list of ingredients is a move towards greater transparency while still protecting proprietary details of specific fragrance formulae. This initiative shows the responsibility and accountability of the fragrance industry and our commitment to communicate our extensive safety program.”

According to the official IFRA announcement:

This initiative enhances the transparency of the North American communication initiative where manufacturers of cleaning products, air care products, automotive care products, polishes and floor maintenance products voluntarily disclosed ingredients in these products on January 1, 2010. The initiative is led by the Canadian Consumer Specialty Products Association (CCSPA), and in the United States by the Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA) and The Soap & Detergent Association (SDA).

The list presents an opportunity for consumers, consumer product companies, NGOs and others to learn more about the materials used in the formulation of fragrances. How these various groups use and react to the list remains to be seen.
