“We are especially proud to see Marie Salamagne and Frank Voelkl join the ranks of our master perfumers," said Emmanuel Butstraen, president perfumery and beauty, dsm-firmenich. "Being named a master perfumer at dsm-firmenich is a rare distinction that recognizes exceptional talents whose creations combine artistic excellence with commercial success, generating some of the industry’s most significant fragrance achievements for brands around the world."
“Marie and Frank truly embody what it means to be a master perfumer today: exceptional creativity, a deep mastery of our ingredient palette and a rare ability to advance the art of perfumery through a vision that is both bold and innovative,” said Jonathan Simon, president global fine fragrance, dsm-firmenich.
With the promotions, Salamagne and Voelkl join an elite group of dsm-firmenich master perfumers that includes Alberto Morillas, Olivier Cresp, Honorine Blanc and Nathalie Lorson. The company describes the distinction as the culmination of decades of creative excellence, technical mastery and leadership, recognizing perfumers who not only craft commercially and artistically significant fragrances but also advance ingredient innovation and mentor the next generation of fragrance creators.
Within dsm-firmenich, Master Perfumers serve as stewards of olfactive excellence, combining deep knowledge of the ingredient palette with an ability to translate scientific innovation into emotionally resonant fragrances. The role also reflects a commitment to preserving the heritage of perfumery while driving the industry's future through creativity, collaboration and mentorship.
Marie Salamagne: Emotion Through Technical Mastery
A Paris native, Salamagne's path to perfumery began unconventionally. Raised in a family of physicians, she initially pursued medical studies before shifting to chemistry, ultimately discovering her vocation at ISIPCA. After beginning her career at a fragrance house in Grasse, where she developed an appreciation for natural raw materials, she joined Firmenich in 2001 and trained under some of the industry's leading perfumers, including Olivier Cresp.
Over more than two decades, Salamagne has become known for fragrances that balance broad consumer appeal with a distinctive artistic signature. Her portfolio spans prestige, designer and niche brands, including Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Mandarine Basilic, Maison Margiela Beach Walk and By the Fireplace, Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium, Dries Van Noten Soie Malaquais, rabanne Fame, Jo Malone London Orange Marmalade, Jimmy Choo I Want Choo Le Parfum, Gucci Flora Gorgeous Orchid, Ralph Lauren Polo 67 and Prada's recent blockbuster Paradigme.
She has also maintained long-standing creative partnerships with brands including Azzedine Alaïa, Issey Miyake and Kenzo, building a reputation for fragrances that pair technical precision with emotional storytelling.
Frank Voelkl: Global Influence Across Prestige, Niche and Celebrity Fragrance
Voelkl brings a distinctly international perspective to the master perfumer ranks. Born in Germany and inspired equally by nature and fine fragrance, he discovered perfumery while living in Paris before studying chemistry and attending ISIPCA. After beginning his career in Germany and later relocating to New York, he refined his minimalist creative philosophy under the mentorship of Maurice Roucel.
Based in the United States for the past three decades, Voelkl has built one of the industry's most recognizable portfolios, spanning luxury designer brands, American niche houses and celebrity fragrance lines.
His creations include Gucci Bamboo, Tom Ford Tuscan Leather Intense, the expanding Glossier You franchise—including You Rêve and You Doux—Dolce&Gabbana Velvet Amber Sun, Calvin Klein Eternity Aromatic Essence for Men, Phlur Mood Ring and Father Figure, House of BŌ Casa Blanca, and Liberty LBTY Zephirine.
Voelkl is perhaps best known for his enduring collaboration with Le Labo, where he has created nearly 20 fragrances, including the modern icon Santal 33, as well as Thé Noir 29, Thé Matcha 26, Baie 19 and Violette 30. His work also extends into celebrity fragrance, with creations for Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber and, most recently, Dwayne Johnson's Papatui brand.
Alongside his commercial achievements, dsm-firmenich cited Voelkl's commitment to mentorship and knowledge-sharing as central to his elevation, highlighting his belief that innovation is strongest when grounded in craftsmanship and tradition.
