California Proposition 65

The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment is currently beginning the process of drafting possible regulatory language addressing the methods of delivery and content of warnings for exposures to listed chemicals in foods. OEHHA is soliciting participation in a stakeholder workgroup and FEMA has been following these activities. FEMA also intends to become a stakeholder.

There are several flavoring substances and substances in process flavors listed under Proposition 65 including: acetaldehyde, estragole and methyleugenol. Just because these substances are listed does not necessarily mean that their presence in foods will result in labeling of those foods. However, there is the potential for some serious labeling issues in the future. (Source: FEMA)
