In a position released May 30, the EFSA announced that it could not rule out a clastogenic or aneugenic potential for two substances, 3-(2-furyl) acrylaldehyde and 4-(2-furyl)but-3-en-2-one. The two chemicals were chosen to represent a subgroup of six furyl derivatives with the α,β-unsaturation in the side chain, and each contained a structure that is an alert for genotoxicity. The panel determined that in order to fully understand the genotoxic risk, an in vivo Comet assay should be performed for both substances, with an additional micronucleus assay for 3-(2-furyl) acrylaldehyde.
