The British Society of Flavourists (BSF), the British Society of Perfumers (BSP) and the Society of Cosmetic Scientists (SCS) once again assembled to host the Bringing the Senses Together event on February 8, 2024, at the Royal Society of Chemistry in London.

The day kicked off soon after lunch and went through the evening welcoming a line-up of speakers from the perfumery, flavor and cosmetic industries. Opened by short introductions of the three societies, the event was split into three sessions followed by round table Q&A.

Sessions included:

  • Andrew McDougall (Mintel) spoke about the main consumer trends in cosmetics.
  • Professor Jane Parker (Reading University) gave an overview of the possibilities (and limitations) of predicting the smell of odorants via machine learning.
  • Greg Archer (Lanzatech) shared the latest progress on the industrial conversion of COx to ethanol and beyond.
  • Dhanushka Hettiarachchi and Sophie Crosthwaite (Quintis, Australia/UK) presented sandalwood touching on its organoleptic profile, history, application and production challenges.
  • Marc van Leuven (Isobionics) spoke about the biotechnology applied to the production of specific citrus essential components (such as sinensal).
  • Heston Blumenthal (chef, writer and television presenter) transmitted his passion for his work through an inspirational talk centered around the symbolism of his coat of arms.
  • Matthew Williams, Laura Gibbs, and Trevor Groome (IFF) spoke about the challenges behind the production of cis-3-hexanol and its pivotal role in flavor and fragrance formulation.
  • Virginie Daniau (BSP) presented the 2023 Fine Fragrance Excellence Awards for the categories: Men, Women and Unisex.
