According to this patent, many fragrance ingredients used by perfumers to create new fragrance accords are commodity ingredients. They are therefore non-proprietary and different versions of them exist, which may differ in price and quality. As such, their use may be based on cost as well as performance.
For example, the commodity ingredient 3a,6,6,9a-tetramethyldodecahydronaphtho[2,1-b]furan 2 is used to create certain isomers or isomer mixtures, including Ambrofix from Givaudan, Ambroxan from Kao, and Cetalox and Fixambrene from Firmenich. Thus, there is a need for key intermediates and novel synthesis processes to produce fragrance ingredients in high purity and good yield but in a cost-effective manner.
In relation, the inventors have found that 2-(alkoxy or aryloxy carbonyl)-4-methyl-6-(2,6.6-trimethylcyclohex-1-enyl)hex-2-enoic acid is a useful intermediate for the preparation of valuable fragrance ingredients, and it can be prepared economically.
