In part I of this cedarwood series (Perfumer & Flavorist, May/June 2001), we discussed various cedarwood oil types and derivatives. In part II of this cedarwood series (Perfumer & Flavorist, July/August 2002), we discussed the application of cedarwood and its derivatives in various types of fragrances. We have also given examples of the use of cedarwood in imitations of several essential oils, and of the use of cedarwood derivatives in some specialties.

Essential oil of Artemisia Pallens Wall (Davana): a study of minor constituents
Artemisia Linn is a large genus, comprising some 280 species found in the northern hemisphere. About 34 species occur in the temperate region of the north western Himalayas (W.I.R.M, 1948). Artemisias are bitter aromatic herbs or low shrubs often with much divided leaves and inconspicuous flowers borne on numerous small heads. Some of them are medicinal and are the source of santonin, a valuable anthelmintic drug. Several species yield essential oil and a few are reported to be useful as fodder. The species which are used for production of essential oils are A. absinthium Linn. and A. dracunculus Linn. Artemisia pallens is a minor item in the essential oil trade and is produced only in India.

Detection of new trace constituents in the essential oils of Cymbopogon flexuosus
The essential oil of lemongrass is derived chiefly from two important species of Cymbopogon, C. flexuosus, which has been the subject of numerous investigations, and C. citratus, C. flexuosus (Stend.) Wats (sym. Andropogon nardus var. flexuosus Hack), is native to India. Its two strains, SD-68 and OD-19, which have been cultivated at our Kukrail Research Farm, Lucknow, were examined by gas chromatography and the presence of new trace constituents was established for the first time.
