In this article, I will focus on the production of aroma chemicals from orange. But I will also mention other essential oils that are sources of aroma chemicals.

Orange blossom

Orange blossoms are the flowers from the bitter orange tree, Citrus Aurantium Linnaeus. Originating in China, the bitter orange tree was probably introduced to southern France somewhere between the tenth and eleventh centuries AD byt the conquering Arabs. It remained the only orange known to Europeans for about five centuries. Since the fruit of this tree is so unpalatable (though more sour than bitter from this author's first hand experience) it is no wonder that products for fragrances were developed.

The volume of orange oil, terpenes, and d-limonene produced is directly related to the quantity of oranges processed for orange juice.

Neroli in Perfumery

Neroli oil is obtained from the bitter orange tree blossoms by distillation. Nero]i plays an important role in classical and modem colognes, It is also used as a component in various women’s and men’s fragrances. Neroli is an expensive flower oil, and synthetic compounds are used to cut or to replace entirely the natural oil in less expensive fragrances and colognes.

A good method of teaching him to memorise the various fragrances is to group them in "families" or "series."
