The annual production of citrus fruits in Italy amounts to about 3,500,000 tons, 31% of which goes to the transformation industries. Table I reports the production data, the quantity transformed and the essential oil obtained from each fruit.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to find accurate information about bitter orange and its essential oil because the production of this type of orange is very limited.
The contribution of Sicily and Calabria to citrus production in Italy reaches 90% at least, which makes them tbe most important suppliers of Italian citrus products. In particular, Sicily produces about 70% of the total amount of citrus, and 90% of lemon fruit produced in Italy.
