New compounds with small rings in essential oils
Despite the continuing discovery of new synthetic fragrance raw materials, essential oils still remain the other half of the foundation of perfumery. Consequently, the analysis of essential oils is still very much of interest, as is illustrated by the excellent series of articles by Lawrence in this journal. We now wish to report a number of products containing small (three-, four-, and five-membered) rings, most of which are found for the first time in essential oils. These products were isolated by chemical group separation, liquid and gas chromatography, whereupon the structures were determined by mass, infrared and NMR spectroscopy. All structures were confirmed by synthesis. The essential oils used were obtained from regular commercial sources.

Commercial Perfumery and the Molecular Genetics of Olfaction
The question that has long challenged researchers is: does the olfactory system use a few receptor types to recognize many odor molecules, or does it make use of many receptor types? The definitive answer there is a large and diverse multigene family of receptor proteins. There may be as many as 1000 different receptors in action in the human nose.

Separation of Fragrance Materials from Perfumed Consumer Products
In isolating the fragrance materials, which are usually present only at low levels, the analytical chemist is confronted with a formidable separation challenge, particularly when the sample also contains emulsifiers, surfactants, clarifiers, thickeners, solubilizers, pigments, antioxidant, UV-absorbers, preservatives, solvents, and other materials.

Trends in Aroma Research and Gas Chromatography-Olfactometry
This paper looks at two aspects of aroma research, First, we'll review the last 20 years of research concerning volatile constituents in foods and beverages, particularly certain volatile constituents formed from sugars and amino acids during food processing, then we’ll give a brief overview of recent developments in gas chromatography-olfactometry.
