Bergamot oil, which is produced by coldpress of the fruit peels of Citrus bergamia Risso et Poit. (syn. C. aurantium L. subsp. bergamia [Risso et Poit.] Wight et Walker-Arn.) primarily in the Reggio Calabrian region along the Ionian coast of southern Italy. Huang et al. (1986) examined the composition of an oil produced from the ripe fruits of C. bergamia grown in China.
In addition, trace amounts (<0.05%) of butyl acetate, (Z)-3-hexenol, hexanol, camphene, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, a-phellandrene, 1,4-cineole, a-fenchyl alcohol, g-heptalactone, citronellal, isopulegol, lavandulol, nonanol, dodecane, citronellol, pulegone, citronellyl formate, geranyl formate, nonyl acetate, a-terpinyl acetate, decyl acetate, a-humulene, an isomer of a-bergamotene, (Z)-nerolidol, (E)-nerolidol and b-bisabolene were also characterized in this oil.
