The Appellate Division found that Jay-Z was entitled to summary judgment on his counterclaim to Parlux's 2016 lawsuit over perfume royalties.

An appellate court ruled Thursday (February 24, 2022) that American rapper Jay-Z is entitled to more than $4.5 million in royalty claims against Parlux after the perfume company filed a $68 million lawsuit against the rapper in 2016, alleging he failed to uphold his end of a 2012 contract to promote Gold Jay Z Fragrance, as reported by Page Six.

During the initial three-week trial in October, a jury found that neither party should have to pay royalties to the other, however, on appeals that had been pending during the trial, the Appellate Division, First Department, found that Jay-Z was entitled to summary judgment on the royalties counterclaim.

Justice John Higgitt wrote in the unanimous decision, “The record is clear: Parlux sold licensed products after July 31, 2015, but failed to pay royalties on those sales.”

Parlux alleged that Jay-Z and his company S. Carter Enterprises LLC broke their agreement when he failed to appear at promotional events on Good Morning America, Women’s Wear Daily and the 2014 Gold Jay Z launch at Macy’s.
