Showcasing new developments in flavor ingredients, Symrise (Holzminden, Germany) will present its Actiplants Bilberry ingredient, an extract of bilberries (Vaccinum myrtillus) with an anthocyanin concentration of at least 25%, among its presentation at Vitafoods 2011. The company's overall presentation will focus on consumer demands for healthy, balanced nutrition. Consumers are paying increased attention to and taking responsibility for their own physical and mental well-being, with lifestyle and eating habits playing a major role in this development. The corresponding food and ingredient products must meet many different—and sometimes contradictory—demands. Even if function plays the major role, taste will lead to the ultimate decision.
In addition to functional ingredients for food, the company also provides flavors and colors for pharmaceutical products, or combines function and taste in formulations such as drink shots. Also, among other products, Symrise’s standardized plant extracts of its Actiplants line of products, developed to strengthen the cardiovascular and immune systems and to maintain mental and physical health, which are suitable for many applications in foods and nutritional supplements, include Actiplants Immune Bilberry, Actiplants Immune Aronia and Actiplants Cogni-tive Rhodiola.
The company will also demonstrate various ways of using customized flavor solutions to improve the often bitter, medicinal tastes in pharmaceutical preparations such as effervescent tablets, granulated materials and chewable tablets. Dirk Bennwitz, senior vice president of the Symrise consumer health business unit, said of the company’s participation at Vitafoods, “Up to now, applications have focused on either function or taste. Our expertise in these two areas brings these worlds together. We know, after all, how to adapt components so that they will work in our clients’ applications. Demographic developments lead us to believe that the market for health products will continue to grow. Many consumers want to eat a balanced diet and to be healthy and active throughout their entire lives. At Vitafoods 2011 in Geneva, we will present solutions that respond to those concerns.”
