The 9th Art and Olfaction Awards (AOA) have opened a call for submissions. AOA's mission is to honor excellence in artisan and independent perfumery, and in experimental work with scent.

AOA accepts submissions from independent and artisan perfume brands, as well as artists and experimental practitioners with scent. Submitted perfumes and experimental projects must have been released to the market or exhibited to the public in the period between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022.

Submissions for the 9th Art and Olfaction Awards are open until November 30, 2022. To submit, participants must fill out an online form. Instructions about sending the sample are sent to the submitter’s email, once the submission has been accepted.

The 9th Art and Olfaction Awards is set to be hosted in Los Angeles in May 2023. The AOA will be the closing event in LA Scent Week, a celebration of perfumery and olfactory art that includes the third edition of the Biennial Scent Fair at Craft Contemporary Museum (May 5-7, 2023), art exhibitions, talks, studio visits and workshops.

The four juried categories include: the Art and Olfaction Artisan Award, the Art and Olfaction Independent Award, the Sadakichi Award for Experimental Work with Scent, and the Aftel Award for Handmade Perfume. Additional awards include Contribution to Scent Culture Award and the Septimus Piesse Award.

All submissions for the Art and Olfaction Artisan Award, the Art and Olfaction Independent Award, and the Aftel Award for Handmade Perfume will be judged blindly, by an international cohort of judges who have themselves shown exceptional dedication to the field of perfumery. Judges engage in the task with no fiscal renumeration, as a service to the community, and abide by a strict code of ethics.

Submissions will be accepted until November 30 by visiting artandolfaction.submittable.com/submit.

Saskia Wilson-Brown,  founder, The Institute for Art and Olfaction, says, “On behalf of the judges, I am thrilled to launch the latest edition of this community-driven, community-run event. We all look forward to another year spent celebrating and furthering unfettered expression and creative risk in the fields of independent perfumery and olfactory art.”

The finalists for the 9th Art and Olfaction Awards will be announced at a press event in March 2023 at Esxence, in Milan.
