Editor's Note: Innovation with a Twist
Today, citrus, particularly in F&F, remains a source of innovation and inspiration, and is also the theme of this month’s issue. Due to its volatile properties, perfumers aspire to create citrus formulations with staying power. Volatility in the market place has included citrus materials in the recent EU tariffs from US exports, while suppliers invest in developing natural, organic and sustainable replacers in response to environmental challenges and high demand.

Editor's Note: The Meaning of Wellness

Perfumer's Notebook: Stability of Fragrance Profile
An essential feature of any well compounded fragrance is its property of maintaining a constant profile during its exposure. This applies to fragrances applied to the skin, as with colognes or perfumes, or exhibited on the surface of toilet soaps. Marked change in profile during exposure may occur through lack of attention to relative evaporation rates of the perfume components. The rate at which a substance evaporates is, of course, a direct function of its vapor pressure, i.e. its tendency to change from liquid or solid to a gas.

Natural and Organic: the Emerging Revolution
What’s driving the biggest dynamic shift in the F&F industry? Imagine a world in which the price of gasoline is 25 cents a gallon, where Starbucks Frappuccinos are nutritious and contain no calories, and you actually like your mother-in-law. Unrealistic, perhaps, but for those involved in the organic world, and organic personal care specifically, the announcement in August 2005 that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will allow for USDA certification of personal care products was received with equal disbelief.
