Art of perfumery: Exposing the Perfumer
What it means to be a perfumer in the information age and the need to communicate with consumers. According to
Merriam-Webster’s
online dictionary, a perfumer is defined as “one who makes or sells perfumes.” This rather simplistic definition, circa 1580, offers no insight into what a perfumer actually does.

Digitally Delivered Fragrance and the Perfumer
For as long as man has used fragrance, it had one feature that set it apart from all other forms of esthetic decoration, cultural messages, sensory agents and psychological magic: once you presented it, you had lost control over it. It would float wherever diffusion and air currents carried it.

From the burning of odorant woods and herbs through incense, fragrant oils and pomades to our modern aerosol technology, the search for a more pleasant surrounding goes on.

Quality in a Perfume
The sooner the perfumer starts using all the other disciplines available, including and especially those of the manufacturer, the more success and the more quality will be put into each creation. So going back to the original preposition of the perfume and quality, the answer lies in the two words--total involvement.

Fragrance and Social Behavior
My research on fragrance and social behavior is concerned with how people use fragrances to create social images and to play social roles. As a social psychologist, I am well aware that people employ a wide variety of strategies and tactics, some subtle and others not-so-subtle, to control the images they convey to others. With the support of the Fragrance Research Fund, we are looking at the role that people’s choices of fragrances (that is, their perfumes, their colognes, their after-shaves) play in the fashioning of images.
