Firmenich is launching a collection of 10 renewable and upcycled ingredients as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce the perfumery industry's reliance on fossil fuels.

The Re:New Collection is powered by Sylvergreen, Firmenich’s innovation program designed to convert essential fragrance ingredients obtained through traditional petrochemistry means into renewables created from carbon sources.

The ingredients in the Re:New collection instead are derived from pine trees. It sources pine trees specifically grown in poor soil, where food crops cannot be grown. Pine and other items with sustainable origins are upcycled and transformed in Firmenich's ingredients facilities by scientists, who turn them into renewable molecules using green chemistry principles.

"We have been pioneering unique and impactful fragrance ingredients that empower creators since 1895," said Maud Reiter, Ph.D., VP discovery chemistry & development. "With the Sylvergreen innovation program we are now going the extra mile following green chemistry principles to convert perfumery ingredients towards renewable versions, with the intention to minimize their environmental footprint. We are extending our legacy for the benefit of perfumers, customers, consumers and planet Earth."

Firmenich aims to become number one in the renewable ingredient segment, with the goal of making 100% of its fragrances renewable by 2030.
