Survey: 87% of Americans Feel Their Best When They Have a Clean Home

Eighty-seven percent of Americans feel their best, both mentally and physically, when they have a clean home, according to survey data released by the American Cleaning Institute.

According to the survey, conducted by Wakefield Research, 70% of Americans find that having a clean home gives them a sense of accomplishment, as well as enhancing one’s mood (66%), increasing productivity (63%) and decreasing stress and anxiety (60%).

In addition, 60% of Americans report feeling more attracted to their partner when they take the initiative to clean their home. 

Brian Sansoni, ACI senior vice president of communications and outreach, said, "We know that cleaning means so much more now than it used to. In everyday life, we see that cleaning is caring. We know that cleaning can contribute to our physical health, from washing our hands with soap and water to properly cleaning and disinfecting to prevent the spread of germs that can make us sick."

Perfumer & Flavorist+ tapped Sabine de Tscharner, principal perfumer, Consumer Fragrances at dsm-firmenich to discuss how scents are incorporated and the power of functional fragrance and to touch on the current trend of functional fragrance utilized in home care.

de Tscharner shared, "Scents are everywhere in our lives. Not just with the perfumes we wear, but in every product we use.

The kitchen soap, our special body wash and the family laundry, each of these products are scented and add to our sense of well-being. We will find our shampoo more moisturizing if it has a rich creamy fragrance, and we will feel our towels are clean if they still smell fresh when we use them a week later. Fragrances are how consumer products reinforce their claims and they will drive repurchasing and overall satisfaction of consumers. And since the pandemic, we are more aware than ever that a beautifully scented candle can make our house feel like home."
