The first chapter covers the characteristics of important essential oils, while the basic structure and composition of perfumes is found in later chapters, with detailed descriptions of some historically important perfumes.

The book also covers methods of training for perfumery, approaches for composing new fragrances, the chemistry of odorants, the physiology of smell as well as the increasing use of technology and artificial intelligence in fragrance development.

The author, Raymond Young, is an Emeritus Professor from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, specializing in natural products, chemistry and ethnobotany, with B.S. and M.S. degrees from Syracuse University and Ph.D. from the University of Washington-Seattle.
