According to these inventors, the recent diversification of cosmetic, health, sanitary and pharmaceutical products requires flavor and/or fragrance substances to have high diffusibility and unique odor qualities that are long-lasting and stable, as well as safe. Further, materials having floral or citrus-like odors are in high demand, and not enough novel compounds satisfy such requirements.

Compounds having a cyclopropane ring are known as useful raw materials for flavor and/or fragrance compositions. For example, [1-methyl-2-(5-methyl-4-hexen-2-yl)cyclopropyl]methanol has a citrus-like odor; 3-methyl-5-phenyl-1-pentanol has a rosy floral note; and 1-methyl-2-[(2,2,3-trimethylcyclopentyl)methyl]cyclopropyl]methanol has a natural sandalwood-like odor.

Furthermore, 2-(1-phenylethyl)cyclopropylmethanol and like compounds having a cyclopropane ring and a benzene ring are known but their odors are not mentioned in the patent literature.

As such, these inventors have found that a compound obtained by subjecting an allyl alcohol derivative to cyclopropane formation has a strong floral or citrus-like odor, and can serve as a useful odor-imparting agent.
