Beautycounter's Clean Eau De Parfum Targets the 'Fragrance Loophole'

Beautycounter has broken into fine fragrance on its own terms.

The brand's five-scent Clean Eau De Parfum range targets what it characterizes as the "fragrance loophole," which allows brands to avoid disclosing the ingredients comprising scents.

Often cited as an intellectual property matter by brands and their formulation partners, Beautycounter instead believes the exception "allows companies to legally hide dozens to hundreds of ingredients ... under generic listings such as 'fragrance' or 'parfum.'"

This perspective has been disputed by industry organizations such as the International Fragrance Association, which focuses on the industry's science- and safety-centric approach to scent.

Nevertheless, clean beauty proponents such as Beautycounter have continued to voice worries over the presence of materials they characterize as "allergens, endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, skin irritants and ingredients toxic to the reproductive system."

The brand argues that consumers should have greater visibility into the materials they put on their bodies.

To that end, Beautycounter's new collection features complete ingredient transparency via long ingredient lists for consumers to review.

For an example of what this looks like in practice, see the ingredient deck for the Second Skin Clean Eau de Parfum SKU below.

The range is EWG Verified, Leaping Bunny certified and reportedly tested for sensitive skin safety.

The SKUs include the previously mentioned Second Skin Clean Eau De Parfum, as well as Pacific Dreams Clean Eau De Parfum, Hyper Rose Clean Eau De Parfum, Sun Spill Clean Eau De Parfum, Miles Away Clean Eau De Parfum and the Clean Eau De Parfum Discovery Set. The eau de parfums are also available as rollerballs.

"Whenever asked for a piece of advice on how to navigate the personal care market, I have always recommended that people shop fragrance-free," said Gregg Renfrew, founder and CEO of Beautycounter. "Many of the most offensive chemicals are found in fragrance. I think it is our right and our responsibility to give people safer solutions that they are confident wearing. I am proud that Beautycounter is launching a collection of beautiful scents, screened for safety, and am energized to continue to build on our history of disruption to create a higher industry standard, and most importantly protect the health and safety of more people."
