A Scent of New Jersey Lavender
Coveted for its medicinal, aromatic and therapeutic properties, lavender is known for its clean and medicinal aroma due to small amounts of camphor and eucalyptol. A closer look at fresh lavender flowers reveals some interesting details about the constituents between leaves and flowers.

Creativity and Research A New Compatibility
Looking at maps like these is a fairly imprecise thing. These maps are averages and general, but what we have the ability to do for the perfumer is to make use of the reference set. We can show this map but really not as our last word on the subject, but as our first advice about a general direction.

The Search for New Aroma Chemicals
lthough up to 10,000 natural and synthetic aroma chemicals exist, the search for new or improved products is ongoing in the flavor and fragrance industry (F-1). The search for new substances starts with the analysis of the possible benefits, the existing knowledge and the routes that can be followed.

Sustainability: Our New Reality—Expanded
“Sustainability isn’t a mega trend; it’s an über trend,” said Torsten Kulke, kicking off the two-part Fragrance Sustainability Strategies presentation during day one of the 2016 World Perfumery Congress (WPC). “Uber trends change our lives, and they don’t ebb and flow or go out of style.”

New Developments in Physiological Cooling Agents
Examining the rapid development in the chemistry and uses of cooling agents. Physiological cooling agents are ubiquitous ingredients in many consumer products, such as chewing gums, toothpastes, mouthwashes, lotions and shampoos. Based on numerous new patents and publications, research and development in the field continues at a fast pace.

1990’s Creative Challenges for a New Decade
Mr. Chairman, members of the American Society of Perfumers, honored guests and speakers. It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 36th Annual Symposium of the Society. It is with particular pride and accomplishment that the society completes three and one-half decades of providing a forum for our industry. A forum which permits those within our industry or related to it to present their ideas or works to a large representation of the business at one time.

The of a Development and Introduction New Perfumery Chemical
The synthesis of new chemicals is one of the principal activities of the research and development program of International Flavors & Fragrances, Inc. (IFF). These new chemicals are extremely important tools which fuel the perfumer’s creativity. Consequently, the majority of new IFF chemicals are first commercially used by our own perfumers in a fragrance or a specialty base.

New compounds with small rings in essential oils
Despite the continuing discovery of new synthetic fragrance raw materials, essential oils still remain the other half of the foundation of perfumery. Consequently, the analysis of essential oils is still very much of interest, as is illustrated by the excellent series of articles by Lawrence in this journal. We now wish to report a number of products containing small (three-, four-, and five-membered) rings, most of which are found for the first time in essential oils. These products were isolated by chemical group separation, liquid and gas chromatography, whereupon the structures were determined by mass, infrared and NMR spectroscopy. All structures were confirmed by synthesis. The essential oils used were obtained from regular commercial sources.

The Claisen Transposition in the Preparation of New Odorant Substances
Through this work we have verified that the application of this reaction to different ketones produce γ,δ-unsaturated ketones with a wide range of interesting notes. We believe that it is a good reaction to use in the search for new odorant substances.

Investigating New Essential Oils: Rationale, Results and Limitations
Research in new essential oils may provide benefits (missing aroma notes, new sources of isolates, new chiral compounds), but it must reassert its originality and vigor and it must recognize the constraints of economics and regulations.

Synthesis and Odor Characteristics of New Gem-Dimethylcyclohexane Derivatives
Searching for cyclic analogs of the insect juvenile hormones, we synthesized a series of new compounds containing the cyclogeraniolene system. This system can be considered as a cyclic form of acyclic terpenes, such as dihydrocitronellol, dihydrogeraniol, and menthocitronellol. The isoprenoid chain in these compounds is rolled to form the cyclohexane ring by connection of the carbon atoms C-7 and C-10. As compared with the classical cyclic systems of the cyclogeraniol type, the compounds obtained by us contain the gem-dimethyl groups in the 3-position in relation to a chain with the functional group.
