The Future for Olfactory Research

For whatever reasons, until relatively recently the fascination with the sense of smell was the province of the perfumer, the novelist and essayist, and the occasional scientist. This has now changed and we are in for some big discoveries and, almost certainly, some big surprises as well.

New Constituents in Olibanum Resinoid and Essential Oil

Olibanum, or frankincense, a well appreciated perfume raw material, is a gum-resin produced by wild small trees growing in Arabia and Somaliland. This gum-resin results either from natural exudation or from unnatural incisions made in the bark of the tree. The gums from Arabia and Somalihind converge to Aden, the main trade place for olibanum; these gums usually result from two species of the genus Boswellia (fam. Burseraceae): Boswellia carterii Bird, (Arabia and Somaliland) and Boswellia frereana Bird. (Somaliland).

Production of Rosemary Oleoresin Using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

An outline has been reported of the experiments helpful to appraise current understanding of extract production with supercritical CO2 for use in flavorings and fragrances. Additionally, a recent publication detailed the results of preliminary experiments performed to assess the suitability of employing supercritical CO2 in the production of oleoresins from Rosmarinus officinalis L.
