On November 11, 2024, the United Kingdom’s Competition and Markets Authority approved Arla Food Ingredients’ acquisition of Volac’s Whey Nutrition.

Volac is an international dairy ingredient business that specializes in whey-based proteins for sports nutrition products. The company was founded in 1970 as a collaboration between dairy industry entrepreneur Dick Lawes and veterinary student Philip Paxman. Volac currently operates seven production facilities in the United Kingdom, the United States, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Luis Cubel, vice president and managing director of Arla Foods Ingredients said,” This is a very welcome decision at a time when demand for high-quality whey ingredients is growing. It means we’re a step closer to a significant acquisition that would consolidate our position as a leader in the whey nutrition space.”

James Neville, joint owner of Volac, commented, “We were always confident that Arla Food Ingredients had the necessary expertise and values to take our whey nutrition business to the next level, and we are delighted to have reached this important step in the acquisition process.”

The two companies signed an acquisition agreement on April 18, 2024, which was followed by a formal evaluation from the Competition and Markets Authority. Further comments on the joining of the companies are forthcoming, according to Cubel.
