Henry van Ameringen, philanthropist and friend of LGBTQ causes, passed away at 89.

Henry van Ameringen, member of the founding family of International Flavors and Fragrances, passed away on September 9, 2020, in his Manhattan home.

Henry is survived by his spouse, T. Eric Galloway and six nieces and nephews. He was 89 years old.

Henry was a philanthropist and an advocate for LGBTQ and AIDS-related organizations. He donated around $200 million of his fortune. In 1986, Henry went above and beyond just writing checks by volunteering often at At God's Love We Deliver, which brought meals to people living with AIDS in Manhattan.

Henry even created his own organization, the H. van Ameringen Foundation, in 1967, which donated to organizations that responded to the AIDS crisis. He was honored by the Funders for LGBTQ Issues, a philanthropy group, in 2017.

Henry's father was the founder of IFF and Henry worked in the family business until his retirement as European vice president for fragrance marketing.

Despite his wealth, Mr. van Ameringen was approachable and put people who sought his financial help at ease.
