FDA May Take a Larger Role in Cosmetics Oversight

Congressman Leonard Lance (R-NJ) has introduced a new bill into the House of Representatives that would modernize and tighten Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulation over the cosmetics and personal care industries. While the FDA already did have oversight of the industry, H.R. 4395 would create a greater role for it. The agency would set new processes for companies to register with it and to review ingredients, as well as give it more oversight in ingredient review findings. The bill would also give the FDA authority to create industrywide guidelines for good manufacturing processes and national uniformity.

The bill has the full support of the Personal Care Products Council. President Lezlee Westine says she looks forward to working with Lance and the FDA.
