Progress in Essential Oils

Lawrence discusses the composition of clementine oil (Citrus clementina) from Sicily, China, Uruguay, Japan and Corsica. In addition, Lawrence explores the composition of stoechas oil (Lavandula stoechas L.) from Morocco, Turkey and Tunisia.

Orange blossom

Orange blossoms are the flowers from the bitter orange tree, Citrus Aurantium Linnaeus. Originating in China, the bitter orange tree was probably introduced to southern France somewhere between the tenth and eleventh centuries AD byt the conquering Arabs. It remained the only orange known to Europeans for about five centuries. Since the fruit of this tree is so unpalatable (though more sour than bitter from this author's first hand experience) it is no wonder that products for fragrances were developed.

Progress in Essential Oils: Long Pepper Oil

The present article is a survey of literature evaluating the constituents of Piper longum L., or long pepper, fruit oil. In one case, early researchers found the oil was devoid of monoterpene compounds and rich in sesquiterpenes, with b-caryophyllene being the major hydrocarbon. Lawrence (1978) and others also examined the composition of P. longum, the findings from which are discussed here.
