Contribution to the study of the chemical composition of the essential oil from the terminal branches of the cypress tree in the Grasse area

In a previous study of the chemical composition of the essential oil derived from the Algerian cypress, we compared the oil with oil obtained by steam distillation of the terminal branches of cypress trees from the Grasse area. We then noted some differences that affected the relative proportions of certain constituents. The richness in high constituents, in particular, prompted us to begin the study of this higher fraction. Cypress essential oil possesses a dry-down odor which is both woody and amberlike and is greatly appreciated by perfumers; this also makes it worth studying.

The Essential Oil of Spike Lavender Lavendula Iatifolia Vill. (L. spica D.C.)

The history, botany, isolation methods, physiochemical properties, chemical composition, olfactive properties and application and production and trade of the essential oil of spike lavender will be treated. Because during the last ten years up to 350 constituents have been detected in the oil, the chemical composition will be discussed in more detail.

Prior to the investigations of the present authors, Dutt reported the physiochemical constants of the essential oil from oleoresin. Thus far the oil has not been completely analysed. In the present investigations the authors have made an attempt to analyse the essential oil extracted from the oleoresin of Vateria indica.

A Preliminary Analysis of Some Lavender and Lavandin Cultivars

We have examined the essentiaI oils of twelve lavender and five lavandin clones from the nursery trade in the United States and Great Britain to assess them for future agronomic utilization. In order to increase the confidence of extrapolating from a laboratory situation to commercial field conditions, a plant of ‘Grosso,’ a leading cultivar of lavandin was also included in this study.

Leaf Alcohol

Leaf alcohol and its derivatives are a symbol of the “green revolution in flavors and fragrances that developed in our industry during the 1960’s.” Its commercial introduction changed the nature of flavors and fragrances and resulted in the wide spread use of n-hexenyl based materials, Today, more than 40 structurally related aroma chemicals are being utilized in our industry and all at relatively low formula percentages.

In summary, the prospect for lavender notes in perfumery is bright. Personally, I am convinced that we will see once again a more sophisticated application of them in all sectors of perfumery.

Indian Curry Leaf

A member of the natural order of Rutaceae, Murraya Koeniglii (Linn) Spreng, the "Indian curry tree" is a pretty, small shrub or tree up to 6 m in height and 15 to 40 cm in diameter. For years, Murraya koenigii in addition to its therapeutic values, has enjoyed a unique status as a flavoring principle in Indian cuisine.
