Givaudan brought its alternative proteins expertise to an industry roundtable backed by Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR).

Launched by prime minister Lee Hsien Loong, the event is part of the country’s agri-food development plan to explore future opportunities in food.

Flavio Garofalo, Ph.D., global category director, savory flavors and natural ingredients, delivered a keynote speech on the taste and functional aspects of plant proteins to government officials and leading food industry representatives from across the region.  He addressed overcoming the taste challenges associated with alternative proteins, and reviewed the various plant-based proteins highlighted in a recent white paper produced in collaboration with the University of California, Berkeley.

“Interest in alternative proteins and meat substitutes is growing rapidly across Asia-Pacific markets, in response to consumer interest in healthier food choices and the need to feed growing populations in a sustainable way. With our presence in the region and our recognised expertise, Givaudan is ideally positioned to support the development and growth of alternative proteins in Asia,” said Garofalo.

He continued: “Supporting knowledge sharing events such as this, as well as recent investments we’ve made in the region, for example India and Indonesia, reflects our 2020 growth strategy which includes a focus on high-growth markets in the APAC region”
