Sustainable Particle Design for Optimized Ingredients, Package Reduction

GreenParticleDesign850x425

According to the German-based company Glatt, specializing in production and process engineering, the dissolution, release behavior and homogeneity of ingredients can be sustainably improved while also minimizing packaging requirements.

The company will explore these and other concepts during the SEPAWA congress in Berlin, to be held on Oct. 23-25, 2019.

The Drivers

Online media, YouTube influencers, environmentalists, plastic waste activists, consumers in general and industries themselves have pushed companies to rethink their eco and sustainability policies. Add to this the pressure from retailers who seek to omit specific ingredients. This, in turn, drives the need for effective replacement technologies.

Process Particulars

According to Glatt, fluid and spouted bed processes can be used to sustainably influence various aspects of particle design, including the washing of stabilizers, enzymes, polymers, fragrances and flavors; and optimizing the production and protection of other active ingredients

Spray granulation, agglomeration, coating and/or encapsulation (microencapsulation) can enhance the properties of sensitive raw materials and functionalize particles. In addition, dissolution, release behavior and homogeneity parameters can be improved to guarantee optimum cleaning activity with the minimum use of raw materials.

Packaging Reduction

Furthermore, since these materials are more specifically and reliably compacted and dosed, packaging design savings can be achieved. Glatt Process Engineer Katja Oppermann will explain in more detail at the event during her lecture, "Process Options in Fluidized Bed Technology for Value-adding Product Forms."
