Kimba is betting that the future of better sleep may begin with the sense most closely connected to the brain: scent.
The emerging sleep technology company recently announced the launch of Kimba and a $5.4 million seed funding round led by Selva Ventures, alongside Resolute Ventures, Able Partners, Fresh Fund and other investors. The investment brings Kimba’s total funding to $6.5 million as the company opens orders for its personalized scent-based sleep system.
Positioning scent as a new frontier in sleep innovation, Kimba combines sleep science, olfactory neuroscience, AI and real-world sleep data to deliver personalized scent interventions designed to support different stages of the sleep cycle.
Unlike traditional sleep technologies that focus primarily on tracking metrics or rely on external interventions, Kimba claims it uses a closed-loop system that continuously learns from individual sleep patterns. The platform reads sleep behaviors, selects targeted scent formulations, delivers scent at optimized moments throughout the night, measures responses and recalibrates future experiences.
The company’s approach is built around the unique connection between olfaction and the brain. Unlike other senses that are processed through the thalamus before reaching higher brain regions, scent has a direct pathway to areas involved in emotion, memory and autonomic responses, making it a promising tool for influencing sleep-related brain states without requiring conscious attention.
Kimba’s scent formulations are created with 100% natural-origin ingredients, with each blend designed around specific sleep goals, including nervous system calming, relaxation and cognitive recovery. The collection includes formulations featuring ingredients such as high-altitude French lavender, citrus and botanical notes.
The company’s scientific team includes experts in sleep research and olfactory science, including neuroscience advisor Anat Arzi and sleep science advisor Peretz Lavie. Kimba’s development is informed by research exploring how scent can influence slow-wave sleep, memory formation and autonomic responses.
While the company does not position Kimba as a medical treatment or replacement for clinical sleep care, it aims to expand the role of scent in wellness by applying emerging research in olfactory science to everyday sleep experiences.
