Progress in Essential Oils: Galangal Oil

Galangal or greater galangal oil is obtained from the steam distillation of comminuted rhizomes of Alpinia galanga Willd. a spice which has a woody, fl oral spicy aroma that is dissimilar to ginger. A limited amount of oil of galangal is produced in various countries in southeast Asia.

The Characteristics of Lavender Oils from Eastern Europe

Lavender oil (ex. Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) is produced commercially by a number of countries: France (the main supplier), Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine and Australia. The oils from each of these regions possess distinctive aroma characters, which range from the fine, flowery, fresh notes in the French oils to herbal, woody and camphoraceous with fatty notes in the Australian oils. Herein, it will be shown that these differences in aroma can be translated into a visual form (map) that assists comparisons with chemical analysis data.

At present, adequate information has been developed on the agronomic and oil extraction procedures to enable the initiation of commercial geraniol production using the Morden No. 3 Monarda hybrid. This hybrid grows well under the dryland culture in central Canada. It is winter hardy and of a perennial nature; the oldest plantation is six years old and is still in good production.

The present article is a survey of literature evaluating the constituents of Piper longum L., or long pepper, fruit oil. In one case, early researchers found the oil was devoid of monoterpene compounds and rich in sesquiterpenes, with b-caryophyllene being the major hydrocarbon. Lawrence (1978) and others also examined the composition of P. longum, the findings from which are discussed here.
