Honeysuckle in Perfumery and Cosmetics

Honeysuckle belongs to the family of floral odors like lilac and lily of the valley for which there are no natural materials available and are considered important in perfumery. In the past honeysuckle absolute produced commercially in small quantities was used in deluxe fragrances. The advent of aromatic chemicals enabled the perfumer to develop synthetic compounds, which are now used in perfumery.

Natural Products and Their Sources

Our subject is the future supplies of natural raw materials for the essential oil industry. I would like to encourage continued research into the chemistry of natural materials. Often fascinating new chemicals can be produced directly by isolation from essential oils, or by further chemical processing of these isolates. Despite legislative difficulties, this work should be continued apace. Our growth and future lies here.

Total syntheses of spirovetivanes and khusimone

The majority of these substances belong to the sesquiterpene group of natural products. Among these α-vetivone, β-vetivone, the norsesquiterpene khusimone, and three biogenetically derived C12-ketones provided the most exciting chemistry. Since the spiroketone and khusimone appear to play a significant role in the reconstitution of the essential oil, we have developed total syntheses of these substances. In an earlier synthesis of the spiroketone, β-vetivone was utilized as starting material; and more recently it has also been prepared by a photochemical route. Among the many published syntheses of β-vetivone two deserve special mention because of their elegance and stereo selectivity.
