Givaudan Flavors Corp. has canceled plans for a major production expansion in Reading, Ohio, abandoning a project that was expected to create 300 jobs and significantly expand the company’s North American manufacturing footprint. According to statements provided to the Cincinnati Business Courier, the Swiss multinational will no longer proceed with construction of a 100,000-square-foot liquids production facility planned for the former Dow Chemical site at 2000 West St.

The project, which carried an estimated investment value of $215 million, had advanced to the groundbreaking stage just six months ago following years of planning and negotiations. The proposed facility was intended to support a new line of business for Givaudan, one of the world’s largest flavor and fragrance suppliers, which maintains its North American headquarters in Cincinnati.

Carla Landon, Givaudan’s head of North American communications, said the decision was tied to unexpected environmental remediation requirements at the site: “We have made the difficult decision to not proceed with developing the site at Reading, Ohio, because more remediation will be required than we anticipated,” Landon said in a statement.

The cancellation marks a reversal from earlier expansion plans announced in late 2024, when the company disclosed intentions to invest approximately $130 million in the redevelopment of the former industrial property. At the time, the project was positioned as a significant regional manufacturing investment tied to long-term growth opportunities in flavor and fragrance production. The investment estimate later grew to $215 million as the scope of the project evolved.
