Natural and Organic: the Emerging Revolution
What’s driving the biggest dynamic shift in the F&F industry? Imagine a world in which the price of gasoline is 25 cents a gallon, where Starbucks Frappuccinos are nutritious and contain no calories, and you actually like your mother-in-law. Unrealistic, perhaps, but for those involved in the organic world, and organic personal care specifically, the announcement in August 2005 that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will allow for USDA certification of personal care products was received with equal disbelief.

The Biochemistry and Psychology of Perfumery
The experimental work described int his paper represents some of the first attempts to study perfumery phenomena in an academic environment. Many complex questions to be asked about our reactions to fragrances are best tackled in a research group which is removed from the daily pressures of a manufacturing environment. There is increasing interest in chemoreception research.

The Power of Scents and Brands
Never before has an interactive discussion between a fragrance house and its client taken place in a public setting. Never before until today, that is—when Jeb Gleason-Allured, editor in chief of Perfumer & Flavorist and Global Cosmetic Industries magazines, and program director of the World Perfumery Congress (WPC), brought both to the stage to lead attendees through the dynamics of the client-perfumer relationship and the power it brings to brands.

Total syntheses of spirovetivanes and khusimone
The majority of these substances belong to the sesquiterpene group of natural products. Among these α-vetivone, β-vetivone, the norsesquiterpene khusimone, and three biogenetically derived C12-ketones provided the most exciting chemistry. Since the spiroketone and khusimone appear to play a significant role in the reconstitution of the essential oil, we have developed total syntheses of these substances. In an earlier synthesis of the spiroketone, β-vetivone was utilized as starting material; and more recently it has also been prepared by a photochemical route. Among the many published syntheses of β-vetivone two deserve special mention because of their elegance and stereo selectivity.

Scent & Spirit: Shamanism and Scent
What does mysticism smell like? We venture away from the glossy perfume counters of today and into the fumes of the past where our ancestors used scent as a portal to explore transcendence and magic.

Perfumery and the Sixth Sense
I have shown that estratetraenol and androstadienone may be used as components in perfumes and can enhance such products. We are approaching a radical shift in the concept of perfumery. Henceforth, the design of a perfume should take into account stimulation of the long neglected sixth sense, the vomeronasal system.

[podcast] The Sound and Scent of Efficacy
"While the consumer will think of ... feeling the softness of hair or smoothness of skin, our research has shown that none of our experiences is just unisensory. ...If we know that perception is multisensory, we start thinking about the role [of other senses]." Creativity and Research A New Compatibility
Looking at maps like these is a fairly imprecise thing. These maps are averages and general, but what we have the ability to do for the perfumer is to make use of the reference set. We can show this map but really not as our last word on the subject, but as our first advice about a general direction.
