Characterization of Super, and Grosso Iavandin Abrialis, by GC-MS

Comparative studies of these oils described in the literature usually stress differences in some physicochemical constants and concentrations of a few major componenets, especially linalool, linalyl acetate, camphor and 1,8-cineole. It was believed that for Customs purposes a more detailed characterization was required, and concentration ranges were established for components present to the extent of more than 0.5% in these oils. Glass capillary gas chromatography was found to be a suitable method of analysis, and mass spectrometry of the separated components aided in their identification.

This study allowed us to test our data bank and to demonstrate its usefulness in the analysis of various aroma and essential oils. Not only the well-known fundamental differences in the composition of sage essential oils related to their origin have been observed but, in addition, twelve new minor compounds have been identified.

The essential oils isolated from different parts of Alpinia calcarata Rosc., (family: Zingiberaceae) growing in Hyderabad, south India, were analyzed by capillary GC and GC/MS. The oil yields were: flower 0.06%, leaf sheath 0.03%, stem 0.05% and root 0.18%. Sixty-two compounds accounting for 92.3-98.3% of the oils were identified.
