We should all realize that the new Toxic Substances Control Act, which Congress is about to pass, will increase considerably the cost of developing new aroma chemicals. The new law may reduce the number of such chemicals drastically. Closer cooperation between the fragrance and the aroma chemical industries will now be even more important in order to maintain a healthy level of innovation in areas of mutual interest.

A Simple Synthesis of 9-Ketodihydro-α-damascone
The compounds, 9-keto-8,9-dihydro-damascones or damascenones, are used as the ingredients in the production of perfumes and aromas. Since these compounds are able to be converted into damascones and damascenones. 9-keto-8,9-dihydro-α-damascone [2,6,6 -trimethyl-1-(1,3-dioxobutyl)cyclohex-2-ene] (I) may be considered as a precursor of α-damascone. Until now, (I) and its analogues were synthesized by the multistep reactions.

Fragrances Through Hydrochlorination of Terpenes
Among the reactions that have enriched terpene chemlstry, perhaps the simplest and one of the outstanding is hydrochlorination. This reaction has been used for structural elucidation, for derivatization to identify and/or purify terpenes and for synthesizing perfumery chemicals. How the application of hydrochlorination on terpenes has unearthed the treasure caves of fragrances is a vibrant chapter worthy of portrayal.

Progress in Essential Oils: Sweet Fennel Oil and Extract
In this column, Brian M. Lawrence reviews the composition of sweet fennel oil and extract as found by various researchers. For example, a commercial sample of sweet fennel oil was screened for its anti-platelet activity by Tognolini et al. (2006) and Guerini et al. (2006) using GC-FID and GC/MS. Results are reported herein.
