An aroma chemical profile: Linalool

The small amount of natural Iinalool available is produced from Bois de Rose oils of Brazil and Paraguay and Ho-leaf oil from Taiwan and China. The volume of supply of natural product, however, has been dwarfed by the supply of synthetic product. The demand for linalool cannot be met by the production of natural oils.

Bergamot Oil A number of years ago, Frey (1988) used the selective ion monitoring function of GC/MS to detect the addition of synthetic linalool and linalyl acetate by determining their impurities (dihydrolinalool and dihydrolinalyl acetate). He found that the addition of as little as 2% synthetic linalool and linalyl acetate to genuine bergamot oil could be detected.

Geranium Oil In 1996, Zang et al. analyzed geranium oil of Chinese origin. Although they found that some of the major constituents were citronellol (24.73%), geraniol (8.79%) and linalool (4.16%), the authors misidentified many of the other constituents; however, it is included in this review for completeness. Möllenbeck et al. (1997) analyzed a sample of geranium oil produced in Madagascar. The oil composition was found to be as follows:

Material Review: Clary Sage Oils

Variation in composition and enantiomeric analyses of commercial vs. new Kashmir clary sage oils. Commercial clary sage oils were analyzed along with a newly available Kashmir oil (Himalayan Foothills Oils, Srinagar, India). All of the oils were high in linalool (14.7–25.1%) and linalyl acetate (55.0–72.4%).

Characterization of Super, and Grosso Iavandin Abrialis, by GC-MS

Comparative studies of these oils described in the literature usually stress differences in some physicochemical constants and concentrations of a few major componenets, especially linalool, linalyl acetate, camphor and 1,8-cineole. It was believed that for Customs purposes a more detailed characterization was required, and concentration ranges were established for components present to the extent of more than 0.5% in these oils. Glass capillary gas chromatography was found to be a suitable method of analysis, and mass spectrometry of the separated components aided in their identification.

Heterocyclic Trace Components in the Essential Oil of Coriander

The essential oil of coriander is obtained from the dried fruits of the plant Coriandrum sativum L, belonging to the family Apiaceae. It is marked by a very high percentage of linalool (approximately 70%), but the olfactory note of this monoterpene tertiary alcohol—when isolated by distillation—is quite different from the one of the purely synthetic counterpart. The special sensory effects of coriander oil have therefore always stirred the attention of flavorists and perfumers all over the world.

Bois de Rose Oil: A Glimpse into the Past

Bois de Rose oil, as it exists today, comes primarily from two sources in Brazil, Empress Industrial Ltda., and I. B. Sabba. While there is limited supply of rosewood oil, there is plenty of pure synthetic linalool (the free of dihydro linaIool variety) which can bolster the short supply. At one point, in the early 1950s, Bois de Rose oil ranked as one of the top 15 “biggest” essential oils in the world. Today, at approximately 100 tons per year, it is in peril of extinction.
