Dr. Farrer-Brown will talk about the work of the Medical Detection Dogs Charity in training dogs to help people with life-threatening health conditions. He will describe how dogs, by sniffing small samples of urine or other specimens, can be trained to identify the odor of diseases, especially cancer and potentially help the development of a simple method of non-invasive cancer diagnosis. In addition to describing the ‘Sniffer Dogs’ Dr. Farrer-Brown will talk about the Charity’s training of ‘Alert Assistance Dogs’, who by detecting minute changes in an individual’s personal odor can alert them of an imminent coma or collapse. This can save the lives of those suffering from health conditions, such as very brittle Diabetes, Addison’s disease and nut allergy. The present studies and future plans of the Charity will be discussed.
