Essential Oil Essential Oil Research and Symposia 1969-1989

The time is ripe, perhaps, to review the development which has taken place since the Essential Oil Symposium started in 1969—and try to see a little ahead. The aims of the symposia should be as before: namely, to bring together scientists who are interested in all aspects of essential oil research, for discussions of common problems and presentation of their results, to the benefit of essential oil research in general.

Mr. Chairman, members of the American Society of Perfumers, honored guests and speakers. It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 36th Annual Symposium of the Society. It is with particular pride and accomplishment that the society completes three and one-half decades of providing a forum for our industry. A forum which permits those within our industry or related to it to present their ideas or works to a large representation of the business at one time.

When Editor-in-Chief Bill Garrett first approached me with the idea of doing an article in the National Geographic on the sense of smell, I looked at him aghast.
