Progress in Essential Oils: Cinnamon Bark Oil and Extract, and Helichrysum Oil

In his regularly featured column, consultant Brian Lawrence reviews the findings of a number of researchers on the constituents in various essential oils. This month, he highlights two oils: cinnamon bark oil and extract, and helichrysum oil.

Indonesian oil of patchouli

Since no generally acceptable product has been created to replace patchouli, demand continues undiminished, and may well increase in the near future. The importance of this essential oil makes it imperative for the consuming industry to have frequent factual reports highlighting growing and distilling areas, the channels of supply, and factors that affect timely availability in the marketplace of good quality products.

Bulgarian Zdravetz Oil

Some of the components of an essential oil have opened the way to the discovery of new groups of compounds with unusual chemical behavior. Our subject, zdravetz (Geranium macrorrhizum L,), belongs to the Geraniaceae family, which abounds in aromatic plants including the genus Pelargonium. It originates from South Africa and is widespread along the Mediterranean coast. Large quantities of pelargonium oil, incorrectly known as “geranium oil,” are produced from different varieties of Pelargonium roseum L. Of the genus Geranium, only zdravetz is used in Bulgaria for production of essential oil and aromatic extracts.
