Major Volatile Constituents of Egyptian Rose Absolute

The composition of rose absolute has not been throughly investigated except for a few reports. However, the composition of rose oils from different origins has been studied in detail. This paper attempts to identify some of the major volatiles of rose absolute prepared from rose variety largely cultivated and processed in Egypt.

Bois de Rose Oil: A Glimpse into the Past

Bois de Rose oil, as it exists today, comes primarily from two sources in Brazil, Empress Industrial Ltda., and I. B. Sabba. While there is limited supply of rosewood oil, there is plenty of pure synthetic linalool (the free of dihydro linaIool variety) which can bolster the short supply. At one point, in the early 1950s, Bois de Rose oil ranked as one of the top 15 “biggest” essential oils in the world. Today, at approximately 100 tons per year, it is in peril of extinction.

An aroma chemical profile: Linalool

The small amount of natural Iinalool available is produced from Bois de Rose oils of Brazil and Paraguay and Ho-leaf oil from Taiwan and China. The volume of supply of natural product, however, has been dwarfed by the supply of synthetic product. The demand for linalool cannot be met by the production of natural oils.

Gas Chromatographic Analysis on Turkish Rose Oil, Absolute and Concrete

The analysis of rose products maybe realized by gas or liquid chromatographic techniques. Our investigations showed that liquid chromatography have been used only in a few studies to separate essential oils and terpenoid compounds, and a sufficient separation has not been obtained.

Rose oil and extracts. Although rose oil and extracts are produced from more than one species of rose, this review is totally devoted to Rosa damascena Mill., which is grown commercially in Bulgaria, Turkey and to a lesser extent, India and Morocco.

Natural Products and Their Sources

Our subject is the future supplies of natural raw materials for the essential oil industry. We might divide these raw materials roughly into three groups: 1) those that serve as raw materials in the production of isolates, competing head-on with synthetics and including citronella, lemongrass, menthol, and clove leaf; 2) those that can be replaced by synthetic oils, such as anis, rose, fir needle, geranium, citrus oils, sandalwood mint oils, and floral extractives; 3) those that are not threatened by replacements–at least for the present– including cedarwood, eucalyptus, guaiaewood, lavandin, ocotea, petitgrain, patchouli, vetivert, and ylang.

Scent and Component Analysis of the Hybrid Tea Rose

The hybrid tea rose as a group is one of the major modern roses cultivated as a garden rose today. It was developed and has been bred since the latter half of the nineteenth century by cross breeding the hybrid perpetual rose with the tea rose.

South African Essential Oils

On investigating the normal origins of most of the essential oils, it is quite clear that the northern hemisphere countries (with few exceptions) have enjoyed the “cherry on the cake” for a very long time. A few examples are listed in Table I. It can therefore be understood why South Africa viewed the essential oil industry with much trepidation, but fortunately there are still pioneers in South Africa that make things happen and things have indeed happened.

Historical and recent developments of essential oils and aroma chemicals

Our industry is unique because it is concerned with agriculture, chemistry, physiology, bacteriology and other sciences. No other industry, chemical or otherwise, produces such a diversified and great number of individual materials. It is also understandable that these operations require the application of various chemical reactions and analytical procedures. The future of the essential oil-aroma chemical industry can be predicted in two words: Continuous Progress.
