Racemic menthol (FEMA# 2665, CAS# 89-78-1), which follows thymol in the multi-step synthesis of menthol, is used as the active ingredient in oral care products, topical analgesics and sanitizers. It is a white, solid mass and colorless in liquid form. It has a pleasant, aromatic odor reminiscent of peppermint.
