New perfume materials from France, Japan, and the United States were presented during the International Perfumery Congress in Portugal in February, 1986. The material descriptions are included in this report.

We should all realize that the new Toxic Substances Control Act, which Congress is about to pass, will increase considerably the cost of developing new aroma chemicals. The new law may reduce the number of such chemicals drastically. Closer cooperation between the fragrance and the aroma chemical industries will now be even more important in order to maintain a healthy level of innovation in areas of mutual interest.

Evaluating Alternate Raw Materials and Processes

Fragrance ingredients have life cycles in the hundreds and even thousands of years. The evaluation of these products, processes and alternate raw material sources is a complex and continuous process which, when successful, can lead to competitive advantages that pay dividends for decades.

Natural materials and the practicing perfumer

I would like to encourage continued research into the chemistry of natural materials. Often fascinating new chemicals can be produced directly by isolation from essential oils, or by further chemical processing of these isolates. Despite legislative difficulties, this work should be continued apace. Our growth and future lies here.
